Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi (Saint Francis Cathedral)

santa fe cathedral

The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi (also refered to as Saint Francis Cathedral) was built in the mid-late 1880's by Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy.

The construction of the cathedral was unique in that the cathedral was built around an older church called La Parroquia that was built in the early 1700s. After the Saint Francis Cathedral was complete, the La Parroquia church was taken down.

The cathedral differs from the Spanish Pueblo Revival look of most of Santa Fe. That's because the cathedral was done in the Romanesque Revival style.

The original plans for the cathedral called for two large steeples to be built on each tower. Due to a lack of funding, however, those were never added.

The cathedral only became The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi in October of 2005 when the Pope promoted it to a basilica. Prior to that, it was simply The Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi.
